Influenced as much by Kerouac and Vonnegut as by Dylan and Votolato, jascha marries inimitable lyricism and heartrending soul with gritty folk rock, poignant harmonies and splashes of the kind of country that takes you back to the spirit of Guthrie himself.

Coming straight out of Springfield, MO., Ha Ha Tonka specialize in disarming and effortless anthems that owe as much to high and lonesome Ozarks mountain music as chugging college rock.

At years end, Popmatters Magazine named Buckle in the Bible Belt one of the best albums of 2007 (In fact, Buckle was ranked #15 for the year, pulling ahead of those lauded indie rockers, Spoon. Wearing pencil-thin black dungarees, a blue velvet jacket studded with rhinestones, and a jewel-encrusted, heart-shaped bolo tie, Rose matched the authentic audacity of his outfit with soulful, dead-on Hank Williams. Brad Naylor on drums is the stylistic soul drummer, who incorporates rock and soul into his drumming, all while making sure to flash his stellar smile. Andrew Sovine is the showboating guitar genius, who always wins the audience by playing his Jimi Hendrix style tricks.

FLAME SHARK (MUSIC JOINT)

Flame Shark sounds like Rod Stewart drugging out on psychedelic pineapples, like a 3D movie from the 50s, I see Flame Shark through the reds and the blues and they resemble the chipped brick walls and crumpled newspapers more than a band tonight. Not even the rats cross their path anymore. Their robust, murky, swirling, harmony-drenched sound has been compared to The Band, The Cash Brothers, Air and The Jayhawks, but they are uniquely who they are...a real band who makes you feel something beyond just being entertained.

Mad Bread is a modern-day string band that plays a mixture of bluegrass, rock, blues, and folk music. The band mixes traditional instruments and modern songwriting, placing them squarely at the crossroads of innovation and tradition. Acoustic and electric guitars blend seamlessly with the more ancient tones of the banjo and mandolin.
Website
Accordions believe their music comes from many places: discovering a way of playing an old forgotten instrument, passionately expressing age-old truths through these newly discovered means, and most of all a sort of gritty sincerity that permeates the songs. And so the resulting music is like a seductive ghost that disappears as soon as you realize it exists, but always returns in an altered form. Accordions can be charmingly dark with their songs of loss and confusion but they have a bright side. Just remember, once they get in your head they will stick around for awhile.
URSA MAJOR (PA)
Website
Mined out of the clay of Pennsylvania, USA, Ursa Major began playing music in the year 2008 AD with nothing but a mandolin, a 6-string picker and a bloody banjo, with lonesome hearts set on bluegrass music and the sound of the common folk. Since that time the music has evolved, but the feeling remains the same. Now based out of Pittsburgh and armed with electric guitars, foot-stompin’ drums, bass attuned to the the Eternal Groove, your mama's church organ, and the same old bloody banjo, Ursa Major has evolved into an energetic swing of folk and Doo-Wop soulfulness.

THE STATE OF (FL)
Website
the State Of is the product of the marriage between Steph Taylor’s edgy piano/synth playing and Nabedi Osorio’s electronic-like live drumming. Their dark pop sensibility is born out of their hometown of Miami, FL and is reminiscent of artists ranging from the Eurythmics and Bjork to Radiohead and the Police. Taylor’s style of playing is often percussive and dark where Osorio’s drumming is melodic and steadfast and when coupled, they create a dynamic sound larger than what’s expected out of two people.

The Happy Talk Band is a four piece group form New Orleans composed of exiles from, respectively, Massachusetts, New York, Arizona, and California. Drawing influences from traditional country, early rock, substance abuse, and crippling bouts of depression. The band's happy-go-lucky compositions lament the joys and pitfalls of booze, fist fighting, bank robbery, murder, religion, dope, exotic dancing, and family values.
Upright bassist, Mike Lenore; drummer, Andy Harris; and lead guitarist, Bailey Smith work tirelessly to orchestrate tragedy in singer/songwriter Luke Allen's life to insure the integrity of future material. As Mr. Harris says, regarding the music, "It's not about fun, buddy. It's about the truth."

LIBER TERAN
Website
Former Los de Abajo singer and guitar player, Líber Terán, shows his solo side. In this new project he explores new musical styles close to classic Rock’n Roll, with influences like Gene Vincent, Jonnhy Cash, Lou Reed, and The Beatles, as well as typical popular and “norteña” Mexican music, whose songs describe and interweave intimate feelings with the harsh urban reality of Mexico City. He shows sensations from melancholic sobriety to nostalgic romance, mixed with violent “chilanga” reality that make this “rock’n roll crooner” “the urban country-man within us all”. After great success with Los de Abajo, Líber Terán launched his solo debut "El Gitano Western", in 2008, and by march 2010, he released his second album, "Tambora Sound System", which mixes music from Sinaloa with balkan, country and electronica.

CAT AND MOUSE CONVENTION
CAT AND MOUSE CONVENTIONWebsite
The ladies of Cat & Mouse Convention joke that they are Chicago's premiere Filipino and Jewish indie rock band. They may not be joking because they have yet to find another all-female Filipino and Jewish band in Chicago (if you know of another, let them know ASAP)! The multi-instrumentalists of all-girl Chicago trio Cat & Mouse Convention embrace the important elements of music. Thoughtful melodies, meaningful lyrics, moving lines, and lush sonorities weave through their sound. Not limited by set standards and instrumentation, the trio easily cast aside what confines many other musical groups. They bring a freshness and sensibility to the stale-repetition that sadly plagues much rock music today. With trained ears, discipline, humor, and honest experiences, they bring new life to the indie rock scene.
ONCE A PAWN (NE)
Website
nce A Pawn is Eric Scrivens and Catherine Balta, a two-piece woman fronted punk/indie/alternative/rock band from Lincoln, NE. OAP has released 2 cds in the past 3 years, “This Way” EP, released in July of 2005 and “Do You Feel Like This?” full-length album in January of 2008. They have been touring now for a couple years around the west and midwest playing with a variety bands from all over the country. For being only a two-person band OAP has a full distinct sound unlike any other. Along with the uniqueness of their band, they play their hearts out and put on a high-energy show regardless.

GRAPH (MA)
Website
"New Hampshire trio Graph make a big impact in a matter of only four songs on their latest self-titled EP, which finds them solving a complex musical equation: melding the frenzied technicality of math rock, the erratic precision of jazz and the melodic sensibility of pop. Some bands may falter in their genre-bending experiments, but not only does Graph have the instrumental and vocal chops to carry out its many headed sound seamlessly, it also pulls it off with enthusiasm and sincerity."

MR. RUSSIA
Website
MR RUSSIA blends two basses with synthesizers, drums and devilish lyrics, that is described as “a slash-and-burn mix of adrenaline and melody” (Jim DeRogatis of the Chicago Sun-Times). THE MUGGS (MI)
Website
The Muggs formed in February of 2000. Guitar player Danny Methric and Bass player Tony DeNardo were playing in two bands at that time: The Detroit Underground Blues Band and Fat Belly Brown. Danny was hanging out at The Music Menu in downtown Detroit when he ran into Matt Rost, a local drummer that had actually been in Fat Belly Brown for about two weeks before leaving, as he decided his band workload at the time was too heavy. They got to talking and Danny found out that Matt had just quit his main project, The Immortal Winos of Soul. Danny mentioned that he was looking to do something different than Fat Belly Brown, something more "bluesy", and Matt said he'd be interested.
THE BLACK OIL BROTHERS
Website
Before the blues found its way to Chicago and redefined itself with electric guitars and drummers, bluesmen were minstrels playing juke joints in the Mississippi Delta armed only with their guitars and voices while the crowd kept the rhythm by stomping their feet in time. Born and raised in Chicago, The Black Oil Brothers aim to channel that kind of boot stompin' blues that doesn’t need a backline or distortion pedals to make it cook. Resonators played with steel slides, wailing harmonicas, 3 part harmonies and the righteous twang of acoustic guitars and mandolin strings define our music (and very well may be saving our souls at the same time). Let us save yours.
THE SUEDE BROTHERS (OH)
Website
"In Cleveland we have a form of music that we affectionately called Rust-Belt Rock and Roll. It's less of a genre and more of an attitude. It's rock and roll music that's low on fashion and filler and big on volume. We live in a region that is gritty, hard-working, and honest. In Cleveland there's a level of pride in being down, but not out and fighting with every last breathe to succeed." - Cleveland I Rock blog, Bill Rock.

People feel something when she sings cause she gives the music everything shes got. You feel her pain. You experience her ecstasy. With France Jean-Baptiste you are sold! Starting off her career with musical theatre, she was told by a stage manager that she sounded very much like Etta James.
JAN JAMES
Website
This tale comes right out of the inner soul of American music. It reads like the street-level truth in the lyrics of a Gershwin classic. What kind of artist finds their way to Chicago after having learned licks on a guitar from a Tennessee guy named "Catfish?" What kind of artist hones powerful vocals in a church choir, and then translates that emotion into a deep understanding of RnB, with Rock n Roll Soul? Jan James is that kind of artist.
Website
Saying James fits the mold of great songwriters could too easily have him fall by the wayside, like many others who have gone that route. But, given his writing, singing, and playing talents , that's unlikely.”

Craig Bell was an original member of the highly influential Cleveland, Ohio punk band Rocket From The Tombs in the Mid 1970's. Heralded as an important protopunk group, they were little known during their brief lifetime, though various members later achieved renown in Pere Ubu and the Dead Boys. Craig, meanwhile, migrated to the East Coast where he founded the bands Saucers, The Plan, & The Bell System in the fertile Connecticut music scene of the late 70’s & 80’s. Now living in Indianapolis, Craig has enlisted some of your favorite local degenerates, and fine musicians all, from The Dockers, Order of the Black Hand, The Relatives, and Hypnotic Velvet Propellers. We play old-old school style punk from the time before mohawks & niches.

Fairmount was born in Oslo, Norway, and a good definition for the band would be: solid, simple, fired up rhythmic rock. To put it in a few words, Fairmount is a burst of energy. Every song seems like a short blast of powerful chords and yet has melodic vocals.

Members of Morphine and Jeremy Lyons draw from the Morphine songbook as well as from Lyons’ deep immersion in Delta blues and New Orleans styles. BULE PLUS
Website
Anyone who has spent time in the country of Indonesia will verify that music is intensely intertwined into the fabric of the culture. Bule Plus (booo-lay plus) demonstrates this with ease. A Bule Plus show is organic and kinetic. Nobody owns the stage, which allows everyone to own it. The controlled chaos is matched with a vital respect for each musician and instrument. On-lookers walk away from a Bule Plus show with one question: “Where are these people from???”
The answer is in the music, not in geography or anthropology. Bule Plus is about a common shared humanity that reaches beyond the oceans and borders that separate America and Indonesia, delivering itself within the framework of harmony, melody, rhythm, and enjoyment.
