FUCKED UP
FUCKED UP

Website
All too often punk music is about getting it right, picking a particular subgenre and acing it the way you might a test. Toronto's Fucked Up has proven the antithesis of this approach since their inception. Formed in early 2001, this five-piece has managed confrontation without cheap gimmicks or novelty, creativity without pointless noodling and intensity without predictable arrangements. Seamlessly plowing through punk's varied past, a Fucked Up song can invoke the melodic anthems of British Oi, the brawny directness of early ’80s American hardcore and the artistic autonomy of a band that doesn't care what its forebears have done before.

ALONG THE PARALLEL

Website
The foundations of Along the Parallel are laid with the classy, hard-hitting drums of John Schiller, which meld with the solid thumps and smooth melodies of Neimo’s bass guitar. The sound is rounded out by guitarist Kyle Lemerand, a euphoric blend of huge riffs and haunting soundscapes. Mike Przwoznik’s “crescent-fresh” voice provides the final ingredient; edgy, thought-provoking lyrics and harmonies. The band’s plan is simple; get their music out to as many ears that they can, inspiring people as much as they have been.

THE GIRLS

Website
Seattle quintet, THE GIRLS, deliver a punk-rock sound armed with both the intuition of the better half and the brawn of the other. We’re talking impressively tight, clean punk-rock that clearly recognizes why bands like Devo and the Cars inspired a good chunk of the bands that inspired a good chunk of the bands that people are always loosing-their-shit for these days.

COLISEUM

Website
If you haven't heard Coliseum, you're in for a big suprise. Picture the same energy of Black Cross, but throw in a bunch of Turbonegro and Motorhead influence, then sprinkle on some Black Flag. The songs, for the most part, are politically motivated.

(LONE) WOLF AND CUB

Website Listen
Wolf and Cub rise from the ashes of La Mantra De Fhiqria, a mathy rock band from Chicago, but Wolf and Cub turn off route from math core, while retaining a few of its vices. They have only one singer, and it trades the math for physics. Wolf and Cub play chug riffs with hopped-up Iron Maiden melodies, so its gets an almost black metal feel. For fans of Pelican and Hewhocorrupts.

BANE
BANE

Website
Screaming has rarely, if ever, been as artful as it is with Bane. The Beantown hardcore merchants platter is, simply put, intelligent, and not in the Fugazi/Bad Religion realm of academic snootiness, though you could certainly do worse than the impassioned social critiques presented admirably and less than amiably by Aaron Bedard. The acumen comes from expanding the boundaries of the (self) limited genre without removing its requisite hostility. The gang-chorus vocals recall the rugged, thugged-out mug-pulling of New York hardcore stalwarts, but the rhythm section is damn near jazzy, like Helmet could have been if it didn't lose its direction, and the soundscapes are atypical, atonal blasts of venom right out of the Henry Rollins (when he was still vital) school of hard knocks about the head and shoulders with a large stick.

H2O

Website
it is impossible to fully appreciate H2O until you have seen them perform live. Toby's unstoppable onstage energy and personality, coupled with the band's solid musicianship, always lends itself to a hard-hitting, unforgettable show. And with the recent addition of bassist Adam Blake (formerly of Shelter), H2O has been invited to tour the United States and Canada with the likes of Murphy's Law, the Misfits, and Social Distortion, and has sold out countless headlining shows all over the East Coast. For H2O, it's all about bringing the music to as many listeners as they can. Says Toby: "Hardcore is not about what you eat, drink, or wear. It is a way of life, the music and the message."

ROYCE

Website
Their sound is one that borrows heavily from acid and Latin jazz, but incorporates more modern elements as well. The result is not unlike Stereolab's shimmering space pop, though without the retro-futurist tendencies. Instead, Royce are a genuinely convincing contemporary jazz band, and they make sweaty Hammond-driven melodies that aren't at all shy of rocking out once in a while. In fact, you never really know what might happen next on this record - just when you think you've fully grasped what's going on here, Royce pull out some Frank Black shit, or break a nice smooth little song down into a rhythmic Billy Mahonie-style guitar-heavy chug. Or wind up a sweet infatuated pop song like Purple Puppies, only to drop some heavy-as-fuck distorted breakbeat that hangs loosely somewhere between Jaga Jazzist and The Prodigy.

THE FORECAST
THE FORECAST

Website
Hailing from the once quiet town of Peoria, Illinois, The Forecast exploded onto the indie rock circuit in 2001. With their must-see live performances alongside bands like Planes Mistaken For Stars, Hey Mercedes, The Jealous Sound, Motion City Soundtrack and The Velvet Teen, they earned a rabid following in not only Peoria, but also the Midwest in general. Taking cues from indie staples such as Rainer Maria, Braid, and The Anniversary, The Forecast give the genre a well-deserved kick in the ass, ratcheting up the intensity and throwing down balls to the wall, in-your-face rock and roll. Dual vocals from guitarist Dustin Addis and bassist Shannon Burns are sometimes sweet - but do not be lulled - they can transition into gang vocals at the drop of a hat, only to turn around and lay down a meandering guitar solo reminiscent of bands like My Morning Jacket.

FOXY SHAZAM

Website
Deep in the vast midwest Cincinnati's Foxy Shazam! spent the past year prior to their 2005 independent release (The Flamingo Trigger) writing, recording and carving their groove into the regional music scene with their loud atchable musical nonsense backed up by thier tideflunkty and marzegatie stage show. Foxy Shazam! has strived to become a band that can take a non-directional sound and make it directional; utilizing blasphermizized piano and sloppy oof bass and guitar licks to create very organized noise which collides doosledly with a tashtfull skewed pop sensibility. Foxy's unkuating sound is compiled from a wide thing that is very big of influences from 50's & 60's-style surf guitar to commercial jingles all balanced flangouriusly underneath vocals that range from bashedmert to almost "fairytale".

Website
Funker Vogt (a German Aggrotech band) returns to Chicago after four long years with their destructive beats and relentless lyrics. This is their only 2008 show in the US! Make sure to be a part of this memorable event! Often compared to bands such as Leaether Strip and :wumpscut:, Funker Vogt 's aggressive electronic style is based upon old EBM strategies, albeit mixed with more modern electro and industrial elements, similar to KMFDM. It is this sound that often makes people refer to their music as being "back to the basics" of the genre. Stripped down power play electronics, Funker Vogt utilize a strong sense of melody within powerful rhythms, emphatic dance beats and distorted vocals.
